MYF charity sheep race

On Saturday the 16th of July Machars Young Farmers held a Charity Sheep Racing Evening at Craig Wilson Ltd, Newton Stewart in aid of McMillan Nurses and Blood Wise.

The evening was in memory of the Club’s late Honorary President, Michael Dunlop, who passed away earlier in the year. The evening was a brilliant success, consisting of six races of sheep where members of the public could place bets on their favourites for a chance to win some prize money! Four sheep at a time raced around a technical course through the market alleys where they were met by a cheering crowd at the finish line.

A raffle was also held on the night in addition to an auction of the winning sheep from the first five races. The funds of the auction were then split with half up for grabs to the new owner of the winning sheep from the final race. This resulted in a cash price of £225 being presented to the co-owners of the fastest sheep of the night named, “I Love Sheep Thrills”, to William Service, Stuart Mactier and James Murray.

Thanks to everyone who indulged in the bar, bought raffle tickets, betted and bought sheep, a grand total of £1527.86 was raised!

A Machars Young Farmers spokesperson said: “The club cannot thank the people who made this event happen enough. They include our race sponsors (RG Contracting, ACPC Pest Control, William Milven & Sons Livestock Haulage, J Johnstone Building & Civil Engineering and Jim Wallace, Claycrop), Craig Wilson Ltd for providing a fantastic venue, Select Bars for providing beverages throughout the evening, The Crown Hotel, Newton Stewart, for hosting a brilliant dance following the event and the Wilson family for providing the stars of the show!
