It’s back to the future for Reg!

Anyone who attended the Douglas Ewart High School in the early 1970s will clearly remember Reg Young.

Among the flares and the tank tops, Reg stood out, obviously, as he was the only black pupil at the school then, and, 40-plus years ago, he spent a lot of time studying at the original Ewart High School building in York Road.

Reg is now a sales executive for property developers RH Letting, based in Prestwick, so imagine his surprise and delight when he was given the job of overseeing the complete renovation of the very same building, now known as Hillview Apartments!

Reg takes up the story: “I came to Newton Stewart in 1968 and I was here at the Ewart for five years. I started in second year and stayed right up to sixth year. My family moved to Britain from Guyana. We were initially in London before moving to Newton Stewart. I clearly remember the first time I saw snow here. I though it was amazing!

“I loved my school days in Newton Stewart but after my gran (Mrs Kathleen Waddy) died I had no reason to come back to the town - until now. I have met up with a lot of my old school friends like Debbie Green, Jimmy Edgar and Jim McDowall and we are now planning an open day this Sunday so people can see exactly what we have dome to the apartments here and I would especially love as many people as possible who remember me from my Douglas Ewart days to turn up.

“It has been a real trip down memory lane bring back here. I even had to chance to go up into the clock tower. Something I could never have done as a pupil. You can see where pupils have written their names and the date - going back to 1813!

“We have completely renovated 15 apartments here creating one, two and three-bedroomed luxury apartments. They have all undergone a complete refurbishment with new kitchens, bathrooms, central heating, electrics, carpets and decoration. This has taken a year to compete and a look round is highly recommended.

“I am looking forward to seeing any old friends this Sunday (June 26) from 10am to 3pm at our cheese and wine open day and if you remember me and want to get in touch my email is and my mobile number is 07801 533 326.

“Please come along and say hello!”
