Congratulations to the Food Train Volunteer Team who scooped up two awards at last week’s Dumfries and Galloway Third Sector Volunteer Awards Ceremony.

The team won the Older and Vulnerable People Organisation of the Year Award, and also the Volunteer Organisation of the Year.

The Food Train, 21 years old this year, was founded to enable older people to continue to live independently at home by ensuring they had supplies of fresh groceries and also bringing social contact and companionship. The service has since developed and now also offers other low cost services including a befriending service for local older people aged 65+ through 1-2-1 home visits, group outings and telephone calls. In addition, the ‘Extra’ handy person service covers odd jobs around the home, including defrosting fridge freezers, window cleaning, changing curtains, etc.

A Food Train spokesperson said: “Our fantastic team of volunteers is key to providing all of our services and make a real difference to the lives of many older people in Wigtownshire. They bring their skills and life experience to support local older people and help them enjoy life and maintain their independence for as long as possible. Our volunteers also gain valuable skills and experience and can become more involved with their local community.”
