Whithorn charity fundraiser Ethel Brolls was both thrilled and overwhelmed at the end of last month when she received the ‘Special Award’ in the Dumfries and Galloway Life magazine People of the Year Awards 2014.
The award was recognition for Ethel’s tireless work sending knitted items to underprivileged children all over the work through her charity ‘Ethel Brolls’ Knitting Appeal for Children of the World’.
Chosen from all of the 2014 finalists, Ethel’s award recognised her tireless efforts in co-ordinating all the knitting donated to her appeal and forwarding it to orphans, babies and children worldwide. The judges described Ethel as someone who had “done so much for children all over the world and for local community groups.”
“She is definately special”, they added.
Ethel told The Galloway Gazette after the glittering ceremony in Dumfries’ Easterbrook Hall: “The award ceremony was a wonderful night and everybody was so kind. I really felt humbled when I received the award. But I don’t do what I do for awards, I do it for the children.
“As someone said, the appeal is like a beanstalk, it keeps growing and growing. It just touches peoples’ hearts.”
So far this year, The Ethel Brolls Knitting Appeal for Children of the World has donated 9,525 items.
