Fifteen-year-old Emily Kay will be Port William Carnival Queen 2017. The Douglas Ewart High School fourth year pupil is hoping to study a science at university. Sporty Emily loves netball and riding and has started her Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award. Emily said she is really looking forward to attending activities and events throughout her year’s reign.
Emily, who has lived in Port William all her life, said she was “delighted” to accept the honour of being Port William Carnival Queen 2017.
The Douglas Ewart High School fourth year pupil enjoys studying the three sciences, PE and graphic communications and is hoping to study a science at university.
Sports fan Emily added: “ I am lucky to be part of the schools very successful netball team, having started playing at Port William Primary. I play goal shoot and we have been placed every year in the Dumfries and Galloway School league. In fact, our team have recently won the Dumfries and Galloway league this year.
“Through school I have started my Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award. For my skill I am learning how to make a quilt, for my physical I am looking to improve my horse riding and for my volunteering I am helping at an after school sport group for primary children.
“Out of school I enjoy looking after my pony Teddie and my dog Ruby. This year I hope to compete with Teddie and take him to some of the local shows. As a member of the Galloway Branch of the Pony Club we get the opportunity to try new things like flat work, show jumping, working hunter, dressage, polo cross and I’m looking forward to trying cross country, although I’m not sure my mum is!
“Out of school I enjoy spending time with my friends. I think if they were to describe me in three words they would say I am kind, trustworthy and hard working.
“I am really looking forward to being Carnival Queen this year as I have always enjoyed participating in the activities organised throughout the week, I just hope that I have the stamina to attend all the activities and events this year.”
Port William Carnival Week runs from Friday, July 28 to Sunday, August 6.
