With parking limited due to ground conditions at this year’s Wigtown Agricultural Show the showjumping had to be rescheduled with the event taking place at Carty Port last Sunday.

The showjumping is always a popular event and crowd pleaser with this year being no exception. A technically built track offered its fair share of challenges to both juniors and seniors alike but offered great entertainment with some superbly jumped rounds.

The first class of the day was the senior 75cm. Eight combinations came forward with five making it through to the jump off. With the fences sitting at 85cm, Leona Wallace took an early lead with Saffy setting the standard with a double clear in a time of 32.31 seconds. However Charlotte McDowall was last to go with her consistent little mare Miami Bubblegum. Setting off at a fast flowing pace the little mare answered every question asked of her perfectly to win the class in an excellent time of 29.58 seconds.

The 90 cm horse class was popular with over 12 starters. Charlotte and Bubblegum looked to be on form and took the lead from the long term leaders Arlene McNabney and Dancing Cavalier who finished eventual third. However there was one combination who stood between Charlotte and her second victory and that was Arlene and her second ride the talented coloured gelding Earl of Eaghan. The time to beat was 32.90 seconds and Arlene and Earl were moving fast to break the finish beam in a time of 29.25 seconds to win the class.

It was a good day for Arlene and Earl who also won the 1m10 with a lovely clear round, the only clear of the class.

This year’s lead rein was a real crowd pleaser with eight super starters. The McConnell family have had a super lead rein season with Dad Munro at the end of the lead rein. Jack had a super round with his pony Nicky but had to settle for second when sister Sara took first place having found a shorter approach to fence 8. A well deserved third place went to Lillian Goad and her new pony Prince Charming ably assisted by Carla Campbell.

The McConnell family enjoyed further success in the wibbly wobbly with sister Zoe also taking home a red rosette on the consistent Nicky with brother Jack taking another second place.

As the fences went up to 60cm, the course became more challenging with fence one, a square oxer coming away from the exit gate, causing five competitors to fault. However four combinations made it successfully through to the jump off, each returning home with a lovely double clear. The times kept getting quicker and as had been the case throughout much of the day last was to come first with Lucy Gaw and Sam taking the lead from last draw.

Lucy and Sam enjoyed further success taking another winning red rosette and sash in the 75cm, ahead of Rhona Baillie and Dancer who took second in both the 60 and 75cm classes.

The 90cm class was action packed with seven combinations making it through to the shortened and heightened jump off. Four competitors had been and the crowd were eagerly awaiting the first double clear. Iona Campbell and Murphy were to find the double clear needed to take the lead. They had a nail biting wait until younger sister Carla had been on Brady. Drawn last Carla wasted no time showing them their time could be beaten. The little dun gelding was flying throughout the jump off to win the class, leaving older sister Iona in second place.

The final class of the day was the 1m 5 pony class, which had a trophy for the winner. Iona Campbell and Murphy gave an early clear and were joined in the jump off by Emma McCormick and her talented mare Shadow. A new ride for 2015 shadow gave Emma a wonderful ride to complete the jump off, and probably got the biggest cheer of the day with the tiny mare really attacking the fences which now stood at 1m15. The final result was a win for Iona and Murphy with Emma and Shadow taking second ahead of Carla Campbell and Brady who were the fastest of the four faulters.

A superb day of jumping was enjoyed by all. Machars Riding Club would like to thank all competitors, spectators and helpers for making the event. As the 2015 season draws to a close the final showjumping event is next Saturday 26th September.
