Tweedie Cup set for kick-off

There are five games scheduled to be played this Saturday, weather permitting – one South of Scotland League match and four Tweedie Cup first round ties.

Bottom-placed Creetown entertain neighbours Newton Stewart at Castle Cary Park for a contest that on present form the Blairmount Park outfit should win. Creetown, though, always raise their game against their local rivals and Newton may have to be at their best to take the three points.

This, however, should be a good game with the visitors the favourites to take the points but Creetown will have different ideas on the outcome.

Newton Stewart have added yet another experienced player to their ranks by signing midfielder Justin Nicoll, who last played for Threave Rovers, St Cuthbert Wanderers before that and Queen of the South as a youth.

As this season’s Tweedie Cup competition gets under way, Crichton have home advantage for their match against Abbey Vale and this is a contest that could go close, depending on which team finds the best form on the day.

Lochar Thistle entertain Nithsdale Wanderers at Maxwelltown High School with both teams in good form. This contest could well take more than the regulation 90 minutes to find a winner but Nithsdale would appear to have the better firepower which could see them narrowly through to round two.

St Cuthbert Wanderers have Heston Rovers as their visitors to St Mary’s Park with a 3pm kick-off. Saints are now leading the league table following a fairly quiet start to their season and are now one of the form sides. Heston, surprisingly, went down to Lochar Thistle 5-3 last time out at Palmerston Park and will be keen to make amends but the home side will start as strong favourites.

Fleet Star travel to Trammondford to play Wigtown and Bladnoch with the home side also strong favourites to make it through to round two. An under-strength Star side were beaten heavily 7-0 last Saturday at Blairmount Park and it would be a surprise if they can bounce back from that defeat in this tie which the home side are expected to win comfortably.
