STRANRAER and District Riding Club members enjoyed two days of top class training with British Eventing accredited trainer Les Smith at Terally on 27th and 28th March.

The Club was fortunate to receive a grant award from Awards for All last year which funded new showjumping and cross country fences as well as money towards bringing in an accredited trainer.

Les Smith has been involved with eventing for 35 years, having competed at all levels up to Badminton and Burghley. Les is also an FEI International Event Judge and British Dressage List 2 Judge.

Over thirty members took the opportunity to benefit from Les’s experience and firm but humorous style of teaching. The weather was kind with both days held in beautiful sunshine. The first day’s training took place in the indoor school at Terally with members being encouraged to think about how they rode their horses and how to approach fences. The gridwork with bounces caused some consternation for a few riders but all succeeded in jumping better and higher than they thought possible.

The second day again dawned bright and sunny for the cross country training in the fields next to the sea with magnificent views across Luce Bay. Twenty people undertook cross country training, as well as having the opportunity to try the new cross country fences recently purchased.

All attending thoroughly enjoyed the two days of training which had been hard work but very worthwhile. The Club is grateful for the support of The Bridge Dumfries & Galloway for their assistance in submitting the successful Awards for All grant application.

The Club is indebted to the Torrance family for the use of the indoor school and cross country jumps field and looking forward to a return visit from Les later in the summer.

The next event is a dressage competition at Terally on 9th April, then showjumping at Castlefields on 17th April. For more information visit the website at
