Former Galloway Thistle football players will take to the field in a ‘legends’ match to raise funds for the club next weekend.
On Sunday 13th July, Blairmount’s 3G pitch will feature two mens teams split by age - the ‘youngers’ squad will be made up of former Thistle players who are now aged between 18 and 26, while the ‘olders’ team will be made up of those aged 27 and over.
Strips, sponsored by Martyn Orr Plumbing and Heating and sports nutrition company Bauer Nutrition, will resemble the original kits that were used when the club was founded in 1994.
It is hoped those keen to support the event will make their way to Blairmount for kick off at 2pm to donate to the cause and watch the match.
Co-organiser Andrew Gibson, who is managing the ‘olders’ squad with Johnathan Munro, is pleased with the interest from former players after launching an appeal on Facebook.
He said: “All the players have fond memories playing for the club and for most it was where they were coached how to play.
“It’s been good fun catching up with guys who we haven’t been in contact with since our days with the club and hopefully on the day there will be a festival atmosphere.
“There are plenty of lads involved who play to a decent standard so hopefully the match will be an exciting one.
“We would like to thank kit sponsors Bauer Nutrition and Martyn Orr Plumbing and Heating for providing the great sets of strips for the match, and we would also like to thank Clone Motor Sport for adapting the strips, they have been a great help. All the players would really appreciate anyone who can come along on the day and show their support.”
The ‘youngers’ squad is being managed by Liam Muir and Gary McKie.
The two squad lists have yet to be finalised and anyone interested in playing in the match can declare their interest to any of the organisers through Facebook or on the event Facebook page: ‘Galloway Thistle Legends Match’.
