Over 60’s Cup
The last of the seniors’ curling competitions, The Over 60’s Cup, was played recently at the North West Castle Ice Rink.
The competition was sponsored by Caledonian Cheese Company, and attracted sixteen teams of four curlers making up four sections. The section games were played as a round robin and the four teams emerging from the sections into a knockout stage were teams skipped by Hugh Kirkpatrick, Hew Drummond, Linda Shaw and John Wilson.
The first semi was between teams skipped by Hugh Kirkpatrick and John Wilson. The game moved forward with the Wilson team gaining an early initiative by winning the first four ends giving them an eight shot to nil lead. The Kirkpatrick team fought back gaining two shots at the fifth end, but when the Wilson team responded gaining a further two shots at the sixth end the game was conceded placing the Wilson team in the final.
The second semi between teams skipped by Hew Drummond and Linda Shaw was keenly fought with the first five ends falling in favour of the Drummond team giving them a four shots to one shot lead, and despite a come back by the Shaw team gaining shots at the sixth and seventh ends, the game finished with the Drummond team gaining a finals place by one shot.
The final between the Wilson and Drummond teams proved to be an exciting match from the start. Both teams were gaining shots on an equal basis until the seventh end when the Drummond team gained four shots to lead by seven shots to five going into the final end. The Wilson team fought back winning two shots making a peeled game and moving into an extra end to decide the winner. The extra end was tight and went to the last stone played to give the Wilson team a single shot to win the Over 60’s Cup. The large gathering of spectators enjoyed an excellent final with good curling from both teams.
Ice Rink President John McIntyre presided at the prize giving and introduced Stewart Wilson representing the sponsors, Caledonian Cheese Company. John thanked Caledonian Cheese Company for their continued sponsorship of the competition. John thanked all who played in the popular competition and the good curling played through the section games to the final.
