Over the past two weeks the annual Newton Stewart v Stranraer games took place with the first games taking place in Newton Stewart.
After the singles, Stranraer had built up a healthy lead of six at 13 - 7 ahead. Newton won the pairs 6-4 which left Stranraer 17 -13 ahead going in to the second game in Stranraer.
Stranraer got off to a sluggish start and at one stage Newton drew level winning seven against three of the first 10 singles but Stranraer rallied and lost the singles 11 - 9 but still had a two game lead.
Stranraer only needed five of the 10 pairs and drew the pairs 5-5 with Jimmy Reid and Craig lamont of the Lochann Inn the victorious pair to secure the shield for the second year running.
For the Newton team, their top players were Alex Connor and David McKinstry with a 4-0 victory ratio and Alistair Brookes with a 3-0 win. For the McGuire brothers from the Isle of Whithorn Kevan and Sean had differing fortunes with Kevan a 4-1 win but for sibling Sean it was a catastrophic campaign losing all of his five games but was equally matched by Donald McCleary who played six but also lost five game and winning one solitary game.
For Stranraer their top players were Craig Lamont won all four games and Ian Lightbody of the Swan A who won five games for the loss of one. For the Stranraer team their failures were Coachman’s duo of Iain Patterson and Craig Fullerton who lost dour and each winning one game but they were eclipsed by David McClorey of the Break A losing five games in total and winning a meagre two games.
It was left to Nichola Louise Smithers to present the shield to a triumphant Stranraer captain Craig Fullerton and a despondent Newton captain Jimmy Rodgers who himself had a 4-1 win count to reflect in what might have been.
