Star out to avoid upset

There is a full programme of South of Scotland League fixtures to be played this Saturday.

The match of the day should be at Islecroft where leaders and still unbeaten in the league, Dalbeattie Star, play hosts to fourth-placed Nithsdale Wanderers.

The Sanquhar side seem to have struck a winning run of form and will be formidable opponents to the league champions. However, Star will go into this match as favourites to take the three points and to keep their unbeaten league run going.

Nithsdale, however, will not just be there to make up the numbers and on their day they are more than a match for most of the South teams and are more than capable of bringing off a surprise result in this contest.

Second-placed Threave Rovers entertain Newton Stewart at Meadow Park for a match that they will be strong favourites to take the points from, although the Creesiders have it within themselves to put up a good show. However, Newton have slipped up badly in recent weeks in the goal-scoring department.

But there is no better place to make amends than at Meadow Park and although Threave should win the three points the visitors will, as usual, make them fight all the way.

Crichton should get back to their winning ways in their match at Hospital Park against Mid-Annandale in what could be a close tussle, while St Cuthbert Wanderers should record a victory at St Mary’s Park when second-bottom Creetown visit.

Abbey Vale will be looking to build on last week’s good 3-0 victory at Galabank over Mid-Annandale when they visit Garries Park to play a still pointless Fleet Star.

There will be a very close contest at Maryfield where Heston Rovers have third-placed Wigtown and Bladnoch as their opponents. Wigtown are a strong and experienced outfit who are looking to challenge the three Stewartry sides in the league this season, while Heston are also keen to make their mark in South football. This all augurs well for a good close encounter with a share of the points being a distinct possibility.
