The South Challenge Cup Round One dominates South football this weekend with some very exciting matches in prospect.
This is the South’s most prestigious competition and includes all the senior clubs with Stranraer having entertained Queen of the South at Stair Park on Thursday night for a place in the second round.
On Friday evening Heston Rovers play hosts to Nithsdale Wanderers at Palmerstone Park in a contest that could well go close although home advantage could see Heston progressing.
There are another six ties scheduled to be played on Saturday afternoon with the much improved Abbey Vale having Wigtown and Bladnoch as their visitors to New Abbey.
Wigtown will start as favourites to make it through to round two but may well have to be at their best to do so as Vale will as usual be a tough nut to crack.
Lochar Thistle play neighbours Dumfries YMCA for a contest that Lochar will go into as very strong favourites to record a comfortable victory while Fleet Star will have their work cut out to take anything from their match against Edusport Academy at Gatehouse.
Newton Stewart and Threave Rovers always seem to enjoy exciting and fairly close matches and there is nothing to suggest that this match at Blairmount will be any different although the Lowland League side will be favourites to progress.
Annan Athletic will travel to Kirkcudbright to play St Cuthbert Wanderers and are expected to play a team of youngsters but in any case this should be another good contest with some good football on display. There is an Annandale derby at Moffat where Uppers meet Mids and the home side will be keen to avenge their recent derby defeat at Lockerbie. This match could well go close with maybe more than the 90 minutes required to find a winner.
