On Sunday, March 2, Machars Car Club held a forward-only autotest at Culquhirk Gravel Quarry, Wigtown, by kind permission of the Templeton family.
Almost a dozen competitors turned out to tackle the twists and turns of the course set out by clerk of the course Freddie Cannon.
As the competitors began their eight runs of the track the times were coming in thick and fast. Callum Ramsay of Stranraer was certainly easy to spot in his bright yellow MG ZR. David Cannon was highly entertaining in his modified Suzuki Sj 410, possibly spending more time on two wheels rather than four.
The battle at the front was close fought between young Ross Milven in his Ford Ka and Neil Mckinnel in his Ford Focus, both proving to be capable of finding the very elusive traction everyone else was seeking.
James Vance was forced into early retirement due to his Toyota Starlet developing a rather unhealthy knocking noise. The team “all smoke and no poke” of Jack Ritchie and Stewart McNabney were pushing their Vauxhall Corsa hard and clocking some impressive times.
Simon McCornick, also driving a Corsa, was showing promise but losing a lot of time on his final lap after his car lost traction climbing a hill, forcing him to reverse and try again.
Husband and wife duo David and Jennifer Wallace, driving their Nova, posted very consistent times but had trouble finding grip as most did. Douglas McVittie, also in a Nova, narrowly missed out on a podium finish.
As the rain began to become heavier the Freddie read the results and landowner David Templeton presented the prizes and the meeting was brought to a close. Many thanks must go to all marshals who helped out on the day.
The next event scheduled is on Sunday, March 30, will be a forward-only autotest, being held at Fellyennan, Mochrum, Newton Stewart, by kind permission from Neil McKinnel, with an 11am start. Helmets must be worn and cars will be safety checked.
