The annual Wigtownshire primary school netball league came to an exciting close last Monday at Stair Park, Stranraer.
This year’s competition took a slightly new approach with all schools competing for an overall champion. This saw 10 primary schools with 12 teams entering the tournament. Each team consisted of seven players and some substitutes mainly girls with a limit of two boys allowed to play.
The teams were split into two leagues and played each other twice over an eight-week period.
Group 1 consisted of Sheuchan, Park, Kirkcolm, Castle Kennedy, Port William and Rephad B.
Group 2 included Belmont A, Belmont B, Sandhead, Glenluce, Leswalt and Rephad A. The games were umpired by volunteers from the ladies league, who helped coach the teams as well as umpiring week by week.
From the group stages the top two teams from each came together for the finals. The final night saw Glenluce, Castle Kennedy, Rephad A and Port William fight it out for the top spot.
The league was won in the last game of the night between Rephad A and Port William, Rephad A narrowly won 1-0, making them Wigtownshire Primary Netball Champions 2014 and completely unbeaten throughout the competition.
The league will mirror the ladies league with a winter and summer competition from next year, with a CPD course for any parents or teachers interested in helping their local school teams out.
