Newton Stewart 12, Dumfries 24
Dumfries re-gained the McTurk Shield after Newton Stewart’s victory in away last season.
Both sides were struggling to field full 1st XVs but the teams that took to the field ended up pretty evenly matched.
The first half saw honours just about even with Ben Haigh scoring first for Newton Srewart, and Iain Russell adding the conversion.
However, Dumfries hit back when they notched a try under the posts after 20 minutes, and the opening 40 minutes ended with the teams locked at 7-7, but there were plenty of opportunities for both sides in a fairly open game.
Dumfries restarted after the interval with more pace and intensity and for 20 minutes Newton Stewart were hemmed back in their own 22.
Staunch defending by the Reds limited the damage but Dumfries added a further two tries to take score to 7-19, the first score, which was converted, coming from a prop under the posts and the second down the wing..
In the 60th minute, Newton Stewart regained a more even share of possession and territory and set about trying to even things up, and an interception try by Russell took the game to 12-19.
Dumfries added a further unconverted try from their winger after poor Newton tackling tyo complete the scoring.
Liam Brawls could have made the score line more presentable for NS but dropped ball as he went to ground it in the last play of the game.
Overall this was a hard-fought game, well referreed by Euan McQuarrie, with the final score a pretty fair reflection of proceeedings.
