Portpatrick take cup

THE County Cup, sponsored by Agrovista Ltd, was keenly contested at Stranraer Ice Rink over two days this week, with the trophy going to a rink from Portpatrick Curling Club from the Rhins O' Gallowa' Province.

The County Cup is the annual inter-province bonspiel between rinks from the Galloway Province and the Rhins Province, played at the start of a new year.

At the end of four session of curling the handsome trophy, presented originally by Sir Mark Stewart, was handed over by Anne Robertson from the sponsors Agrovista Ltd, to Donald McColm, vice president of the Rhins Province, who accepted on behalf of the winning rink, Alastair McWilliam, Jay McWilliam, Mary Anne McWilliam and Sarah McWilliam, who were five shots up.

Anne had also taken part in the competition, playing for Minnigaff CC.

Fourteen rinks took part in the competition and the Rhins were 18 shots up after the fist session and four up after the last session on Monday.

However the Galloway Province curlers began to make inroads into that lead on the Tuesday. After the first session they had reduced the deficit to 21 and then won three out of the four games in the last session to bring the Rhins' lead down to nine.

The highest rink in the losing province was the Wigtown CC rink of Dick Adams, Christine Cannon, Gregor Cannon and Jenni Cannon, who were six shots up.

The winning rinks both received vouchers for local butchers' shops.

At the presentation of prizes, the president of the Galloway Province, Andrew McConchie, congratulated all the winners and commented on how nice it was to see so many junior curlers on the ice.

The vote of thanks was delivered by Rhins' vice president Donald McColm who thanked Anne Robertson from Agrovista for the companies' continued sponsorship of The County Cup. He also had a word of thanks for the work done by the two province secretaries, Janette Sloan and Louise Kerr, organising the competition.
