A Stranraer runner has raised an incredible £1700 for the charity Parkinson’s UK.

Avril Watson completed the half marathon event at the Great Scottish Run in Glasgow last month and this week handed over her cheque to Parkinson’s UK.

Avril said: “I was motivated to run the race for Parkinson’s UK after a close friend was diagnosed with the condition. I know the charity needs all the support it can get to fund research that will hopefully discover a cure for Parkinson’s.

“I have been overwhelmed with the support I’ve had from friends and family and strangers too and want to thank everyone who helped me raise money and get through the race. It was a really tough event and I’ll need a good rest before thinking about doing something like that again!”

Jan Mattison, Parkinson’s UK Regional Fundraiser – West Scotland, said: “The great Scottish Run is a fantastic event for Parkinson’s UK – this year we had more than 50 people running to raise funds for us. It is only through events like this and the efforts of people like Avril that Parkinson’s UK can provide local support for people affected by Parkinson’s and fund world-leading research to find better treatments and ultimately a cure. We thank them so much for their support.”
