Five South of Scotland league teams took part in the third round of the regional cup south on Saturday with mixed results.
Only Threave Rovers survived to fly the flag for South football in the next round.
Wigtown and Bladnoch were unlucky to be beaten by Edinburgh University by a single goal scored by Jack Guthrie in the 19th minute as were Edusport Academy against a strong East Kilbride side going down by two late goals in a 2-1 reverse.
Edu finished with nine men having received two red cards and wilted in the final minutes of their match when Ross McNeil scored for the visitors three minutes from time and Joao Victoria adding a second in time added on.
Abbey Vale were two goals behind at the break in their match against Whilehill Welfare with Michael Osborne and Daryl Healey finding the net. Three second half goals saw the home side go nap when Scott Gormley, Dale O’Hara and Scott Russell ensured progress into round four of this particular competition. Congratulations though go to Threave Rovers who were the only South team to go through to round four when they defeated Lowland League side Vale of Leithen by a single goal scored by Ally Barnes in the 37th minute.
Newton Stewart were put to the sword by a very good East Stirling team who scored nine goals without reply at Ochilview Park. The Creesiders were devastated to lose an early goal to a fast moving home side and before the break were seven goals behind although the home side had been reduced to ten men when Derek Ure was red carded. Newton also lost Roddy Cooksley through a second yellow. The visitors rallied a little in the second half but by this time were well beaten and failed to find the net.
Shire’s Andy Rodgers who was the outstanding player on show scored five goals, two coming from the penalty spot with Kris Faulds with a brace and Derek Ure before being dismissed and substitute Paul Sludden completing the rout.
Although there were only four league matches played last weekend they produced 32 goals between them.
St Cuthbert wanderers being the top scorers with nine goals followed closely by Mid Annandale who scored eight.
St Cuthbert Wanderers’ goalscoring exploits continued when they struck nine times in a South of Scotland league match against a luckless Dumfries YMCA side who only managed two late consolation goals in reply through a Kenneth Meader penalty and a Liam Watson strike.
There was also a high scoring match at Sanquhar where Nithsdale Wanderers and Mid Annandale shared 12 goals with the visitors finding the net eight times. The Lockerbie side opened the scoring after seven minutes through Denver Milligan with the home side levelling the match ten minutes later when Aiden Lang found the net.
In the 25th minute Kevin Roy put Nithsdale ahead but two minutes later the match was all square again when Kevin Smith scored. Ben Johnstone restored the home sides lead seven minutes before the break before a Dean Smith penalty conversion levelled the match once again.
However just on the half time whistle Connor Murray put Mids into the lead 4-3. A headed goal from Nithsdale’s Stuart Bell put the teams on level terms again but a late surge by Mids ensured the three points with goals from Murray, Sean Dunbar, Andy White and an own goal.
Lochar Thistle recorded a 2-0 victory at Lockerbie against Lochmaben with goals from William Dempster and Adam McMath to improve their league table position.
There was a close contest at Moffat where Upper Annandale and Creetown shared seven goals with the home side coming out on top by the odd goal.
Creetown’s goals came from Ross Landers with a double and a single from Dean Fyfe and Uppers taking the three points when Darren Ferbie scored a hat trick added to a Bryan Gilfillan strike.
