Haig Gordon Cup Final
Wigtown and Bladnoch 1
Newton Stewart 2
Newton Stewart broke their 13 year silverware famine when they lifted the Haig Gordon Cup on Wednesday night at Castle Cary Park after beating local rivals Wigtown and Bladnoch 2-1.
In a very evenly balanced contest Newton took the lead after 40 minutes play when Ryan McKie broke the deadlock with an angled shot from 15 yards out but within a minute Jamie McHarrie levelled the match again following a good double save from keeper Harry Fidler.
There were chances at both ends in the second half with central defender Jason Gallacher firing the ball into the net at the back post from a Ryan McKie free kick for the goal that clinched the silverware. Both teams ended the match with ten men after Richard Jones of Wigtown and Ryan McKie of Newton Stewart were red carded.
This is the first time that Newton Stewart have won this particular trophy which has been in existence for over 50 years.
