THE final of the summer recreational mixed netball league took place on Monday 4 July at Port William.
Seven teams participated in the league, Can’t Touch This, Dourie Drivers, Imports, It’s, Machars, Mary’s Guys and Dolls and Port William. After weeks of some great netball with Mary’s Guys and Dolls keeping the lead all the way through it was between them and the It’s in the final.
The first quarter score was 6 - 2 to Mary’s Guys and Dolls. Its not converting points when they had the chance. Second quarter Mary’s Guys and Dolls managed to keep their 4 point lead with a 8 -4 score. With the fast pace of play the score reflects the amount of defensive play on court. The Third quarter was a nail biter as at one point the score was even at 9 - 9 but Mary’s Guys & Dolls managed to pull ahead again and have a 4 point lead again at the end of the quarter, 14 - 10.
The final quarter saw both teams really go for it big style with loud cheering coming from the spectators things were really heating up, everybody was enjoying watching the game and the pace seemed to get even quicker. The It’s managed to close down the Mary’s Guys and Dolls shooting opportunities with an intense team effort on defence , Mary’s only scoring two points in this 15 minute quarter. The score was even and with time running out the Its managed to sink two long range goals , with the final score being 17 - 16 to the It’s! Well done to them and thanks to both teams for providing a good show for the spectators. Rachel Christie won the Morrow award for good Sportsmanship for the year. After the prizes were given out we enjoyed a bbq to round off the summer season.
This game was very fast and kept the umpires on their toes throughout, big thanks to Debbie Johnstone and Deborah Murray.
Thanks to our official timekeeper/scorer Eunice Murray and our volunteers who supported the netball throughout the summer.
