Natural Bodybuilding Federations International Championships in Lemmington Spa in October.

Thirty-seven year old David gained a place in the national team after winning the middleweight class at the UK Drug Free Bodybuilding Association Caledonian Classic in Musselburgh recently and is now training hard for his bid at a national title.

The full time Dumfries-based firefighter told The Galloway Gazette: “I have been doing this for about three years now. I always enjoyed keeping fit and I was a qualified fitness instructor before I became a firefighter.

“I train for around 31 hours a week doing a mix of weightlifting and cardio exercises. I also have a very strict diet with lots of chicken, rice and broccoli. I have to monitor my calorie intake daily and then, nearer to a competition, reduce my body fat levels to bring out the definition of the muscles.

“I previous competed in physique competitions before taking up bodybuilding but I am really looking forward to representing Scotland.

“My wife, Susan, has been a tremendous support to me. I couldn’t have done it without her.”

The United Kingdom Drug Free Bodybuilding Association was founded in 2011, and is the British affiliate of the WNBF (World Natural Bodybuilding Federation) and has a seven years drug free requirement for competitors.
