Machars Riding Club kicked off the 2012 season on Saturday 7th April 2012 at Carty Port, Newton Stewart. Despite the grey clouds in the distance, the weather remained kind.

Course for the day was designed by Showjumper Nigel Springer. Between combinations coming out of corners and a tricky set of white planks to complete the jump off, it was fair to say there were more than a few spills! Numbers in the junior section were high as usual with no less than 12 combinations coming forward to contest the 60cm Pony Class. Senior competitors too came forward in good numbers.

In the Priory Vet Centre sponsored Wibbly Wobbly it was wonderful to see young members Rhona Baillie, Isla Campbell and Emma McCornick getting to grips with riding off the Lead rein, well done girls! Victory in this section went to Rhona Baillie with Queenie who came home with the fastest double clear in a time of 47.94 seconds. Isla Campbell came second with sister Carla’s Henry with the only other double clear. Coming third with an unlucky four faults at fence three was the new combination of Kirsty Fisher and Leo, with Emma McCornick and Promise completing the line up.

Of the twelve starters in the 60 cm class a staggering nine combinations made it to the jump off. Hungry following her victory in the 50 cm class Becky Dalrymple took an early lead this time riding her own Solway Midget in a time of 45.63 seconds. This lead was short lived as she was followed by Izzy Miller-Smith and the speedy Chilli Pepper who after some fantastic turns completed in 38.74 to finish eventual third. The battle for the top two spots went to the Dalrymples. Drawn last in the jump off victory was to go to Alexander and Miami Merlin who completed in 33.53 seconds, (the fastest time of the day). Close behind was Becky and Daisy to took second spot.

In the 85cm class five of the seven competitors made it to the jump off. However as the fences went up the mistakes started to come thick and fast. A special mention has to go to the unluckiest competitor of the day Eilidh Fisher. Known for her fantastic turns on the speedy Sam, luck was not on Eilihs’s side with her broken stirrup taking her out of contention. Again a long run into the final fence the white planks was to prove crucial in deciding the placings. Two combinations were to come home with double clear scores. There was little doubt that between the turns and a fast flowing pace the win was well deserved for Rachael Baillie on the ever consistent Connie, with Iona Campbell and Manny coming second in a slower time. Third place went to Charlotte McDowall and Miami Bubblegum with four faults at the bogey that was the last fence.

After a short break for clear round the afternoon continued with the Senior Classes. The 75 and 85cm classes were to bring forward the biggest number of entrants. In the 75cm class Alexander Dalrymple continued his fine form with a win on the beautiful coloured mare Georgia. In the 85cm class it was Katy Jones and the wonderful Miami Galaxy who were to clench victory with the fastest time of the senior competitors (37.30 seconds).

Arlene McNabney was on super form in the big classes. Following recent successes at Rowallan Activity Centre, Arlene showed that she could perform on home soil too. The more experienced Simba Reno was to show Earl of Eaghan the road in both the 1m and 1m10 classes. A fantastic achievement for Arlene taking the two top spots in both classes.

Special thanks must go to Jennifer-Ann McWilliam for judging the juniors and Mhairi McConnell for judging the seniors, and also to all other helpers who ensured the day was a great success, definitely a team effort!
