Local club pairs chase Club Handicap Title

Golf club pairs representing the Borders and the South are among those going for glory in this week’s Belhaven Best Scottish Club Handicap Championship Grand Final.

Teams, including a pair from Wigtown & Bladnoch Golf Club will chase the coveted trophy at the beautiful Borders venue of The Roxburghe this Friday (19 September).

Part of the Scottish Golf Union’s portfolio of national championships for golfers at all levels, the high-profile Belhaven Best Scottish Club Handicap Championship is staged exclusively for members of Scotland’s near 600 clubs and the cornerstone of Belhaven’s continued sponsorship of amateur golf.

Now in its 15th year, the Belhaven Best Scottish Club Handicap Championship gives ordinary club golfers the rare chance of competing on the big stage in front of the SGU TV cameras.

The leading 40 club pairings have qualified for the showpiece final at The Roxburghe near Kelso – a week before the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles.

Over the impressive layout, which recently hosted Stage 1 Qualifying for the European Tour’s Qualifying School, the teams will seek to emulate Edzell Golf Club, after family pairing Gary Tough and William Bremner edged out Earlsferry Thistle to lift the title at the Fairmont St Andrews last September.

Each club was invited to host a free-to-enter local qualifying event for its members through an existing competition, such as a monthly club medal or stableford event, with the two players topping the leaderboard (nett scores) going onto represent their club at one of four Regional Finals that took place in August and September.

The first Regional Final was staged in the north east at Aboyne, before east coastal course Aberdour held the next. Newbattle and East Renfrewshire also acted as regional hosts.

Belhaven Best began its sponsorship of the Scottish Golf Union back in 1999 and continue to be strong supporters of the club game.

Graham Baird, Director of Sales for Belhaven, said: “The Belhaven Best Scottish Club Handicap Championship is a fantastic event for club golfers and has become a hugely important part of our sponsorship. We’re delighted to support club handicap golfers across the country with this event.

“We are now in our 15th year of as official beer partner of the Scottish Golf Union, making it one of the longest standing sponsorships in Scottish sport, and we’re proud to continue our investment in grass roots golf. We wish every club taking part ‘All The Best’ in the final at The Roxburghe.”

The format for the final is 4-ball better ball stroke play with a 3/4 handicap allowance.
