The Galloway Hillbillies – a group of keen mountain bikers based in Galloway – have been overwhelmed by the very generous financial and voluntary support many local businesses have been giving towards the running of a two-day duathlon the club will host over the weekend of the May q7 and 18 at the new Kirroughtree Forest Visitor Centre within the Galloway Forest Park.

The event will be similar in format to the Dalbeattie Hardrock Challenge with a junior competition on the Saturday and an adult competition on the Sunday. The Kirroughtree Hillbilly Duathlon (adult event) will consist of a 10km run followed by an 18km mountain bike around the flowing trails of the Seven Stanes Red Route.

In the Junior Duathlon, there will be two categories; 8–11 years will compete over a 500m run and a 3km bike section; 12-15 years will compete over a 3km run and an 8km bike section (all distances are approximate). Entrants will be able to compete as individual or team of male/female or mixed. Entries close on Thursday 15th May.

Adult entrants will receive a free Kirroughtree Hillbilly Duathlon t-shirt and juniors will each receive a medal as well as prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. Overall adult winner will take home the Kirroughtree Hillbilly Duathlon Trophy.

A considerable amount of time has gone into the organising of this event by the Galloway Hillbillies – the enthusiasm demonstrated by the team has been unsurpassed and organisers hope the event will be a great success, enabling it to become an annual sporting fixture.

The club would like to thank the many sponsors who have made this event possible: Breakpad Bike Shop, Cream o Galloway, 3b Construction, Rowan Glen, The Round Table Newton Stewart, EMC2, Next Level Bikes, William C Ingram Building Contractor, Holmpark Holiday Cottages, Dumfries Timber Company Group, Ian Broll Joiner and Funeral Director, David Inglis Painter and Decorator, Hillcrest House, Davie Proudlock Joiner, MPG Cycles, Ian McLaughlan Painter and Decorator, Trailbrakes Biking Holidays, Kirkcowan Cycles, Jack Donald Joiner, Spittal Cottages, R Earsman Ltd Builders and Joiners Dumfries, Yorkshire Building Society, Castle Douglas Cycles, Motorwise, BS Electrical, Shennanton Sawmill, J&B Print and The Ellangowan Hotel.

It’s hoped crowds will turn out, either participating in the event or in the support crew. Official partners Cream o’ Galloway and The Breakpad will help keep everyone refreshed and oiled across the weekend.
