Two sixteen-year old Douglas Ewart High Scool pupils are really making a name for themselves on the international rugby field this season.
Calum Gaw from Port William and Robbie Smith from Newton Stewart recently took part in trials for the Scotland Under 16 team and then progressed to three consecutive weekend training camps at the Police College at Tulliallan in Perthshire.
This was all in preparation for The BMW Wellington International Festival, London, from 4 to 11 April. Teams attending the festival are England North, England Midlands, England South West, England South East and London, Wales Celts, Wales Druids, France West, France East, Italy select U17 and Scotland.
During the festival, Scotland’s first game was agaisnt England North on April 5. The Scots won the game 27-17 and Robbie Smith was man of the match. Their second match was against Wales Celts on April 8, which was a resounding loss and their third and last match on April 11 against England South West was another defeat although Calum scored a try.
At the end of the festival, Calum was awarded most improved player in Scotland squad by the coaches.
Now hard work continues for both boys as they aim to progress to the national U18 team.
Calum plays his club rugby at Ayr RFC and Robbie at Newton Stewart RFC. Calum’s playing position is centre/wing and Robbie plays hooker.
