Stranraer and District riding club held their first event of 2014, a hunt cross, at Terally Equestrian Centre last Sunday by kind permission of the Torrance family.

The hunt cross event is a course of show jumps placed around a cross country course where the aim is to complete the course in the fastest time and a couple of joker fences put in to test their abilities.

Sunday’s weather was a battle in itself as the wind was strong enough to blow the fences over and with some driving rain thrown on for good measure; it was challenging to say the least.

But some brave competitors came forward to attempt to make their way round the course in the severe weather, taking it slowly as the ground was wet which meant times weren’t as fast as they could have been.

In Class 1A Becky McKinstry on her pony Jace completed the course in the fastest time recorded all day, to win the Ginger Spice Trophy which was presented to her by Tom Kelly on behalf of the Kelly family. She also went on to win the pairs with Rhona Baillie riding Disco Inferno who rode her first hunt cross beautifully.

In Class 1B Caitlin McKie on her lovely pony Dapper had a really nice round without putting a foot wrong. She was presented with her red rosette and an Easter egg.

Class 2B was next and the jumps went up to 80cms, the rain stopped but the wind seemed to blow even harder! First place went to Bethany Brigg on Rockstar who had a great round.

In Class 3A Carolyn Fisher on her pony Lewis enjoyed their round and came home with an excellent time to take first place, narrowly beating Kerrin McGrane on Ollie.

Class 3B was the turn of the horses and there really wasn’t anything in it! Bethany Brigg on Rockstar must have seen some shortcuts in her first round and managed to trim her time down in this round to take first place just ahead of Jonny Hall on Snoopy.

The pairs in this class were won by Carolyn Fisher and Rachael Baillie who enjoyed their second blast round the course and they both came home smiling.

The presentations were made at the end of the day and all winners were presented with Easter Eggs.

The next event will be our opening show jumping competition at Castlefields on Saturday, April 19. For details see our website
