On yet another great afternoon Newton Under 18s welcomed Birkmyre/Garnock combined team to Bladnoch Park.
With a few changes to last week’s team, Newton were keen to keep up the fast tempo they want to play. Birmyre kicked off and Newton went on the attack with forwards and back combining to make good yards up the pitch.
After Newton were awarded a penalty for a Birkmyre player not releasing Morton could see Birkmyre were not concentrating and a quick tap and he was over the first score.
Newton were leaking a lot of penalties and D Robinson was sin binned for handling in the ruck. This put Birkmyres tails up and Newton had to dig deep as Birkmyres huge front row were sent in time after time on crash balls but Newton held out.
In the second half Newton got straight on the attack with great hands from R Morton, S Henry, R Hainey putting S Wallace close to the line with the resultant ruck R Donald picked and dived over the top for the try. From the next kick off M Craig caught the ball and set off up the field bursting a couple of tackles before offloading to A Ferrie, it was set up and quick ball passed back to Craig, quick ball again saw the backs spin the ball wide for S Wallace to score a great team try.
Another passage of play took Newton up to half way A Ferrie chose a great line and sliced through the defence to score under the posts, Morton converted. This was a much more solid display from the youngsters with Mark Craig and Russell Morton having a very good game.
