The final matches of the year in the South of Scotland League took place last Saturday with a full programme scheduled to be played.
Once again the adverse weather played a part which resulted in only two games being played on 3G pitches.
League Leaders Edusport Academy had Upper Annandale as their visitors to Galabank and the home side ran out winners by three goals to one to maintain their lead at the top of the table although challengers St Cuthbert Wanderers now have seven games in hand.
Heston Rovers played hosts to Newton Stewart at Palmerston Park for a match that was expected to go close and although the home side won the match by two goals to nil the contest was still goal less at the half time break.
Matches between these two teams are usually lively affairs and this one was no different with goalmouth incidents at both ends although Heston held the dominance throughout most of the first half without finding the net.
This was mainly due to Newton keeper Jason McDonald pulling off some heroic saves but in the second half there was nothing he could do to prevent Heston making their mark. The visitors defence was outdone in the sixty fifth minute when a well taken free kick move from Ross Halliday found Jonathon Boyd unmarked eight yards out to slot the ball into the net.
Newton pushed hard for an equaliser and were unlucky when following a goalmouth scramble the ball was headed off the line when it looked destined to level the match. However with the visitors pushing upfield and time running out Heston broke away and found themselves two on one with Ross Halliday having the final touch to score goal number two with only three minutes left to play. There is now a festive season close down in South Football with play resuming on Saturday 9th January, 2015.
