The first Galloway Thistle football festival took place back in 2002 and, since then, it has become a regular date in the youth football calendar in the south of Scotland.
A spokesperson for the football fair said: “This year sees the first time we have had a main sponsor for the event. We are pleased to have building supplies company Jewson support us this year. They have branches in Newton Stewart and Stranraer and Dumfries. We are very grateful for there support.
“The festival kicks off on Saturday 30th April with the 10s,11s, & 12s age groups and play starts at 10.00am. On Sunday 1st May the younger age groups kick off at 10.30am. These are the 7s,8s & 9s ages. Age groups have been sponsored by The Black Horse Hotel, Newton Stewart; Barnean Farming Company, Newton Stewart; Martin Blair Joinery, Newton Stewart and Peter Thomson Transport, based in Wigtown. We are very grateful for the support of these companies and also the many local businesses who have supported us through our event programme which many have done for all fifteen years.
“Once again many teams have entered this year. Eighty-one teams from 15 clubs have entered. These teams come from all over Dumfries and Galloway,Ayrshire and again our visitors from Ballynahinch in Northern Ireland and newcomers Carlisle City from south of the border. We hope all the kids enjoy their weekend of football and that the weather will be kind to us.”
