There was an excellent turnout at this year’s annual Galloway Football Festival which was held in Blairmount Park, Newton Stewart last weekend.
Over 700 players took part ranging from six to 12 years of age with every participant receiving a souvenir trophy.
Two youth football clubs travelled over from Northern Ireland with other from Ayrshire and from across the region. This was the 13th year of the tournament which is run by Galloway Thistle Youth Football Club in conjunction with Newton Stewart Football Club, and is being hailed as one of the best ever with record attendances of players, parents and spectators on both days.
The weather was kind and everybody appreciated the new 3G synthetic pitch which has been installed at Blairmount. For the seventh year Laura McGaw of Laura’s Gift Shop in Newton Stewart presented her Merit Award which goes to an individual or club that has done a lot for Youth Football in the area and this year it was won by Lochar Thistle from Dumfries for the immense contribution they make to the game in the region.
Event coordinator Alex Whiteside thanked everybody for taking part in the tournament and for all the assistance he had received in arranging and running the event. He also thanked all the sponsors for their contribution with adverts in the souvenir programme.
This tournament has went from strength to strength since it was first run at Blairmount Park and with the overwhelming success this year, arrangements will be going ahead soon for an event next year.
