Stranraer leave it late in Scottish Cup win over Kelty Hearts
A penalty deep into injury time sealed a stunning Stranraer comeback over Kelty Hearts in the Scottish Cup second round.
Kelty had a two-goal lead half time thanks to a strike from Nathan Austin and a Kallum Higginbotham’s penalty.
Tam Orr and Scott Robertson struck to level the scores before a 94th minute penalty from Ruari Paton saw the Blues snatch the win.
With the pitch frozen at New Central Park the tie was switched to Raith Rovers’ Stark’s Park in Kirkcaldy and kicked off at 6pm.
Hearts started the brighter of the two sides and it was no surprise when they deservedly took the the lead after 25 minutes.
Jamie Stevenson passed to Nathan Austin who fired a superb 22 yard shot into Greg Fleming’s net.
12 minutes later and the Lowland League side doubled their lead and a Scottish Cup shock was well and truly on the cards.
Austin was fouled in the Stranraer box by Scott Robertson and Higginbotham made no mistake with the resulting spot kick to make it 2-0.
The score remained the same at half time but just three minutes into the second 45 Stevie Farrell’s men pulled themselves back into the tie.
Thomas Orr collected a pass from Andy Stirling and shot for goal, leaving Kelty keeper Scott Jamieson with no chance.
The visitors were now in the ascendancy and after Jamieson had saved well from Adam Cummins they levelled the scoring.
Stirling was the provider once more, crossing for Robertson to make amends for his penalty gaffe by heading in the equaliser.
Both sides had efforts on goal but with the match well into stoppage time the Blues won a penalty.
James Hilton was fouled by Scott Hooper as he was ready to shoot on goal and referee Lorraine Watson pointed to the spot.
Paton kept a cool head and slotted in the winner to put Stranraer through to the next round of the Scottish Cup.
