The former Partick Thistle and Clyde midfielder was due to sign on at Stair Park on the expiry of his contract with Clyde last week.

The deal was agreed when Stevie Farrell was still Stranraer boss, but he has since left the club as has chairman Iain Dougan – and the upheaval has prompted a change of heart from the 23-year-old, who has now signed for Alloa Athletic instead.

A Stranraer statement said: “The changes at the club since Mark agreed to join us have unsettled the player, and he has expressed his reasons for this.

“Following discussions between the player and his agent with the club chairman and manager, we are agreed that in the best interests of all parties, the agreement should be cancelled and Mark can move on with our best wishes.”

Stranraer’s players returned to training on Saturday to start their build up to the new season – and they now know their League 2 campaign will begin with a trip to Elgin City.

The season’s fixtures were revealed by the SPFL this week and handed the Blues a long trip north for their opener on Saturday, July 31.

Stranraer’s first home game sees them welcome Annan Athletic the following week and that’s followed by Cowdenbeath away, Stirling Albion at home and Forfar away.

The Blues’ festive schedule will see Jamie Hamill’s side away to Albion Rovers on Boxing Day and at home to Annan on January 2.

Stranraer’s pre-season schedule kicks off this Saturday with a match at Cumnock Juniors.

Friendlis have also been lined up at Raith Rovers on Saturday, June 26, at home to Ayr United on Tuesday, June 29, and away to Queen of the South, behind closed doors, on Saturday, July 3.

They then play their Premier Sports Cup group stage opener at home to Morton on July 10
