A statement on the club website said it was very difficult to put into words how much he meant to not only everyone at the club but also the south of Scotland football community.

The statement continued: “To put it simply, Frankie was Mr Dalbeattie Star.

“He was involved with the club when we reformed in 1976 and has held virtually every post possible at the club in the 44 years since.

“He had a number of health issues over the last few years but he fought them bravely and refused to let them stop him from his day-to-day involvement at Islecroft.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Morag, Susan and Alistair, and the rest of his family at this very sad time. Rest in peace, Frankie.”

Many tributes were also paid by the south of Scotland football fraternity on social media and there was a poignant moment when everyone took part in a minute’s applause before the kick-off at Tuesday’s match with Caledonian Braves.

Among those paying tribute on social media were Annan Athletics who tweeted: “Sincerest condolences and heartfelt thoughts to Frankie’s family from all at Galabank.”

Threave Rovers posted: “Our deepest condolences to Frankie’s family, friends and everyone at the club from us all at Threave Rovers. A great character and legend at Islecroft.”
