There were three Southern counties football association league cup first round matches played last Saturday.
Abbey Vale, Newton Stewart and Wigtown and Bladnoch all took their place in the next round of the Souths most prestigious cup competition.
Newton Stewart progressed with a 6-2 victory over Lochmaben at Blairmount Park. An early own goal by the visitors keeper put them on the back foot after three minutes play but they drew level four minutes later.
Ryan Dawson then restored Newton’s lead and on the half hour mark and striker Robert Middleton put daylight between the two teams and almost immediately from the kickoff the same player ran through to score goal number four. The Creesiders though missed a penalty before the break. In the second half club captain Micky Wilson rifled home a shot as Newton went nap before Middleton completed his hat trick in the 66th minute. With 71 minutes played the visitors scored a second but it was all too little too late. Abbey Vale saw off the challenge of Lochar Thistle in a 4-1 victory. Dan Thom opened the scoring for the home side after only four minutes with Ryan Service levelling the match after 25 minutes.
Five minutes from the break Struan Parker scored direct from a free kick to restore Vale’s lead and a minute after the restart Thom scored his second with Telfer ensuring victory four minutes from time.
There was a close contest between Edusport Academy and Wigtown and Bladnoch with the visitors coming out on top in a three goal thriller. Blair Dougan put Wigtown ahead and Francisco Gomes equalised. The winner was scored by Richard Jones in the 57th minute.
