Cricketing ladies post first win

Galloway ladies cricket team started the season in great style on Sunday with a resounding win against Ayr ladies at home.

Ayr were all out for 64, with Galloway ladies managing a wicket from almost every player, with some spectacular bowling and catches.

Galloway had a few new players debuting and where sometimes it showed a little in the bowling, at other times the bowling was outstanding.

As always, reliable Pony Ramsay, Natalie Hamblin and Kathleen Hamblin firmed up the ends but our youngest player – 13-year-old Tegan Line – was massively impressive with her bowling and clean bowled one of the Ayr side after putting her under enormous pressure.

One of Galloway’s new players, Donna Mitchell, had a fantasic spell in her first game and took a wicket. Captain/coach Mary Hughes took a fine one-handed caught-and-bowled dive to take her first wicket and Ginger Ramsey let nothing past her as wicketkeeper and even took a catch to claim the final wicket.

After their half-time drinks and snacks Galloway went in to bat with Agnes and Natalie opening. The pair were on fire and, if anything, a bit over eager.

They batted well together but, after an impressive start, Nat was bowled out but had backed up Agnes well.

Next in to bat was Mary. Agnes and Mary managed to raise the sore board to 41 between them before an over-enthusiastic run-out saw Mary depart. Ginger Ramsay finished off the game. Agnes was not out for 29 and Ginger was not out for three. The game was won in the tenth over by the batting side but In the spirit of the game, play continued as practice for another few overs.

The new talent in the Galloway team really showed their worth, with Megan and Donna hitting big boundaries and Dawn Campbell hitting and calling well, showing her experience.

A good time was had by all and spectators wore ear muffs to drown out the girls’ excited support during play. A lovely tea was to be had for all who attended and, hopefully, more support will be had for the next home game on June 16, against Ayr ladies once again (weaher permitting) and on July 7 at home against Stirling County.

If anyone would like to attend the game or indeed would like to join Galloway ladies, call Mary Hughes on 07809226992. Galloway ladies are still looking for sponsors for kit. If anyone is interested please get in touch with Mary.
