Cricket ladies are bowled over

GALLOWAY ladies did their club proud last weekend in Edinburgh. After having only started learning to play cricket in July last year, they spent the winter training for an hour a week indoors to learn new skills.

Last Sunday saw the final indoor tournament of the winter season in Edinburgh and it was the girls’ time to shine in the six-a-side competition. They managed to win two out of our four games – one win was their tournament goal – and narrowly missed another win by just six runs in the play-offs.

Skipper Mary Hughes said: “I would just love to say a massive thanks to all my girls for their commitment and support throughout.

“Well done. You have all done so well, Agnes, Dawn, Gill, Pony, not forgetting Margaret and Sue down south, who will join us again in the summer.

“I would also like to say a very special thank you to Howie Bradley [head coach], who has helped us immensely and who has coached the juniors for years and years to great success and worked tirelessly for our club.

“It was our most successful tournament yet and gives us great hope going into the summer season and the national league.”

Ladies and junior [girls and boys] training starts on Wednesdays from next week at the Cally Palace ground in Gatehouse of Fleet and possibly on Mondays depending on demand.

The team is always keen to entice new members and would welcome anyone, regardless of age or ability. They need more players but are just as happy to have groupies who enjoy being around the social side and don’t mind the odd cake or cuppa. For details, call Mary on 07809226992.
