Abbey Vale 1 Newton Stewart 3

There was only one match played last Saturday following the South of Scotland Awards night and that was the re-scheduled game at New Abbey between Abbey Vale and Newton Stewart.

The visitors, with only eleven players, available dominated the first five minutes or so before Vale won a corner kick on the right which when crossed over low was met by Jack Connelly who placed it through a ruck of players and high into the net to open the scoring. Both sides were creating chances in an open match but it was the visitors who struck after twenty minutes when Johnny Fisher scored the goal of the match with a swerving shot from twenty yards out. There were further chances but no goals up until the half time break so the teams went in level.

Newton squandered a few chances after the re-start and it took until the eighty-sixth minute for them to break the deadlock when Fisher scored a second. With Vale pushing upfield for an equaliser Newton struck on the break two minutes from time through top goalscorer Robert Middleton to secure the three points which ensured the runners-up spot in this season’s league table. This was Middleton’s fortieth goal of the season and Newtons 100th league goal.
