Convincing win for Stewartry

Report by John Lowe

After heavy overnight rain the match was able to start on pitch two.

Stewartry kicked off up the hill and into the wind. Stewartry with five changes from the previous weeks squad and Strathaven in disarray in recent weeks the Blacks started nervously not knowing what the strength of the hosts would be. An early penalty award against Stewartry set the pattern the Blacks being penalised on thirteen occasions throughout the game. J Farquhar was first to break away after good work by I Fenwick and J Picken but was pushed into touch. Next to try their luck was K Riddick but he was stopped ten metres short and penalised for not releasing. C Mosey missed a penalty kick to touch after good play by TJ and D Boyd before C Fenwick playing his first game in the back row broke down the wing putting TJ McCarney in for the opening score at the posts with thirteen minutes gone. C Mosey added the conversion.

For the next fifteen minutes the game was played around the halfway line both teams gaining and losing possession in equal quantity with stalemate the order of the day. From a scrum on the halfway line Stewartry spun the ball quickly out to J Farquhar who charged to the corner for a second Stewartry try just coming up to thirty minutes played. The kick was missed. Strathaven kicked deep into the the Stewartry 22 and enjoyed some play near the Blacks line for the first time in the game. Stewartry won two scrums against the head and S Broll led the charge as he and Boyd, Fenwick and Kerr broke free to give H Sainsbury an open try scoring chance which he failed to take with line in front of him. Half time 12-0 Stewartry.

Strathaven’s kick off did not reach the ten metre line and from the scrum Stewartry Captain Ian Fenwick picked up and set R Austin with Sainsbury off to give Jamie Farquhar his second try. C Mosey converted. Henderson replaced Fisher and I Fenwick was denied a try by his touch judge dad after Farquhar had put a foot on the line before passing inside. Brave decision.

Stewartry fell foul of the referee being penalised three times in a minute. C Mosey calmed it down with a kick all the way to the Strathaven goal line. C Walker replaced C Fenwick.

TJ made it to ten metres out with Sainsbury stopped on the line and John Kerr picking up to score the bonus point try. C Mosey converted. Two minutes later TJ McCarney raced in for his second try and C. Mosey again added the points. On the hour it was a hat trick of tries for Jamie Farquhar C. Mosey taking the score to 40-0. Prop Michael McCulloch made his firstxv debut replacing S.Broll. once again the referee found fault with the Blacks marching them back thirty metres for back chat this was followed up with a yellow card for TJ McCarney. Strathaven taking advantage to score their consolation try. From the kick off Keith Riddick broke clear to score the seventh try. C Mosey added the points. A Cairnie replaced H Sainsbury in the second row and was soon in the action with Boyd winning a penalty which was kicked to touch. Winning the lineout the Blacks drove to line where prop I

McMorran was stopped two metres out allowing John Picken to pick up and score his first first XV try. Craig Mosey added his seventh kick of eight to take his points tally for the season to sixtynine and a convincing 54-5 win for the Stewartry as they move up the table to fourth place.
