Busy week ahead for South sides

The fixtures are coming thick and fast as the end of the playing season beckons within the next four weeks.

There are a mixture of cup ties and South of Scotland League matches being played, with this season’s League Cup final taking place at Palmerston Park tonight (Friday) with a 7.30pm kick-off between Stewartry rivals Dalbeattie Star and Threave Rovers.

Recent form would suggest Star could well have the upper hand in this contest although they too have had their ups and downs recently and seem to be victims of their own success with still having so many matches to play.

However, being a cup final, anything can happen and this game could go right to the wire, even as far as a penalty shoot-out.

The Haig Gordon Cup final takes place on Saturday and will go ahead at Meadow Park where St Cuthbert Wanderers and Wigtown and Bladnoch lock horns.

Again, there does not look to be much between these teams and the result could go either way in what should be a close tussle.

The Challenge Cup semi-final, which was meant to be played at Sanquhar when Nithsdale Wanderers would have taken on Stranraer, has been declared void as the Stair Park side had played an illegible player against Queen of the South in the previous round. Nithsdale will now play in the final.

There are three matches scheduled for Monday evening, May 6, all with 7.30pm kick-offs.

Heston Rovers and Nithsdale lock horns at Maryfield in a South of Scotland League match. Dalbeattie Star play hosts to Wigtown and Bladnoch for a place in the Tweedie Cup semi-final, while St Cuthbert Wanderers play Newton Stewart in the semi-final of the Cree Lodge Cup at St Mary’s Park.

On Wednesday evening, May 8, Heston Rovers play either Dalbeattie Star or St Cuthbert Wanderers in the semi-final of the Challenge Cup.

There are three South of Scotland League games also being played, with Fleet Star entertaining Newton Stewart, St Cuthbert Wanderers playing Crichton, and Threave Rovers and Wigtown and Bladnoch meeting again at Meadow Park.
