The South Challenge Cup first round ties take place this weekend with the Newton Stewart versus Dalbeattie Star being played at Blairmount Park on Friday evening with a 7.30pm kick-off.

This should be a good spectator match with the South of Scotland league leaders locking horns with the Lowland League side. The visitors will start as slight favourites to win this match but it will be a good guide to how far the Blairmount Park side have come under manager George Grierson. The contest could well go close with either side capable of progressing in the Souths most prestigious cup competition. There are two ties scheduled to be played on Saturday with Edusport Academy taking on Creetown at Hamilton in a match that the home side will start as strong favourites to progress.

Crichton play hosts to Fleet Star in a match that could go close and could well take more than the regulation ninety minutes to decide the winner. Both these sides produced good results last time out in their respective Haig Gordon semi-finals with both going down in penalty shoot outs and they could well have to go down that route again this time around.

There are four South of Scotland League matches being played with Wigtown and Bladnoch visiting New Abbey to play a revitalised Abbey Vale. The home side are producing some good football and could well be a match for the present League Champions but a victory for the visitors will put them on top of the league table a point ahead of Newton Stewart although the Creesiders will have two games in hand to the Trammondford Park side. Heston Rovers should be too strong for bottom placed Dumfries YMCA and Lochar Thistle will have to regain their early season form it they hope to take anything from their match against St Cuthbert Wanderers at St Marys Park, Kirkcudbright. The match at Lockerbie between Mid-Annandale and Nithsdale Wanderers looks like one that could go close and in all probability the two sides may end up sharing the points.
