The community of Sanquhar was appalled to learn last week that a memorial to the war dead had been vandalised.
A report was received by police that the statue of the woman sitting on the bench at the war memorial in the town had been vandalised. The statue had been daubed with paint and a number of poppies had been pulled from the ground and strewn around.
The community was outraged, but, as in many local communities, word soon spread and the pair responsible were soon identified. Both have now been reported for the offence.
Chief Inspector Stiff said: “We understand that the crime is a very emotive one amongst the community in Sanquhar and further afield and it is the ongoing work by local officers to engage effectively with young people in Sanquhar that led directly to this crime being detected very quickly.”
