Village plans to go before council

CONTROVERSIAL plans to transform parts of Portpatrick Harbour will go before the council’s planning committee next Wednesday.

Proposals by its owners to demolish the Beachcomber Amusements and replace it with a new building housing the arcade and two flats upstairs have been met with 82 objections - and 311 letters of support.

Most of the concerns raised relate to the potential overshadowing caused by the new building on private land and outside the adjacent cafe and gift shop, which provides outside seating spaces.

Others were worried about traffic congestion at the busy spot and a reduction in car parking spaces as well as heavy re-modelling of the conservation village.

But in support, it was noted that the new amusements would benefit the village and actually improve road safety issues at the spot.

The proposals are being recommended by planners for approval, but previous plans had been withdrawn over fears the building would impact severely on the views of surrounding properties.

A report to the committee states that significant work had been carried out by the applicants’ agents to reduce the impact and maintain views.

Also to be discussed is an application by Portpatrick Harbour Limited for the siting of a portacabin which had originally been placed, without planning permission, on the arm of the category B listed Portpatrick Harbour, but was removed following orders and a failed appeal to Scottish Ministers.

The company are now set to receive permission to site the cabin nearby for up to two years to house the head of redevelopment of the harbour.

A report to the committee states that the cabin would be sited on a area currently housing lock-up sheds which are ugly and in need of updating. The harbour redevelopment plans would see these sheds demolished and replaced in the longer term.

A new berthing point for the updated RNLI Lifeboat due to be delivered next week will also be considered at next week’s meeting, which could see the boat berthed on the opposite side of the harbour arm to where it currently sits.

The application, by RNLI, includes the removal of the prominent fuel tank from the harbour and its relocation to a semi-sunken site nearby.
