The Machars community was left shattered this week after two local men were killed in a single-vehicle car crash near Port William.
And the effects were felt further afield as news spread that 25-year-old William Kirk (known locally as Robert or Bob) from High Bishopton, Whithorn, and 18-year-old Justin McCaig, from Myrton Crescent, Port William had lost their lives.
Police Scotland reported that the black Vauxhall Corsa, driven by Mr Kirk, had struck a bridge at West Barr on the A747 near Port William at around 9.20pm on Monday.
Mr McCaig was pronounced dead at the scene while Mr Kirk was taken to the Galloway Community Hospital where he later passed away.
Tributes were quickly paid to the pair with Mr McCaig ‘s employers at Airyolland Farm, Port William, saying they were in shock.
Rob and Carol Carr said on Tuesday: “We are completely shocked and very deeply saddened by this dreadful news.
“Our hearts go out to Justin’s immediate family and close friends. He had been working for us for a few years and hardly a day has gone past without his cheerful presence on the farm carrying out a myriad tasks while feeling in many ways, part of our family too.
“He was a truly lovely boy with a sharp sense of humour and a very kind heart and we will miss him greatly.”
Friends took to social media to offer support to one another and the families of the men killed. Of Mr Kirk, one said: “You always made everyone laugh! It was an honour to know you both for as long as I did.”
Police are appealing for witnesses and ask anyone with information to contact them on 101.
