Bladnoch Park played host to yet another hugely successful Relay for Life in aid of Cancer Research UK last weekend - raising a staggering £62,129 for the cause.
The 24-hour event which saw team members take it in turn to walk around the rugby field all through the day and night began under a cloud of rain, but it wasn’t long before the Scottish summer shone through and gave the participants a warming boost.
As the day progressed and the miles were clocked up, stalls did a roaring trade selling to participants and visitors who went along to join in.
And as the night drew in and the sun began to fade, the emotional Candle of Hope lap began. Hundreds of personalised candle bags in memory or support of those afflicted by cancer were lit up and relayers took to the track for a slow, silent lap of reflection.
Relayers then wrapped up for a chilly night walking the field until the sun came up once again.
Anne Barclay, chairperson of Dumfries and Gallowaount for charity Relay for Life, said afterwards: “Thank you so much to everyone who took part in or supported Relay For Life D&G this weekend.
“To our dedicated team captains and team members, our inspirational survivors and caregivers, our generous sponsors and donors (in kind, in time or in cash, our tireless volunteers, and of course our excellent supporters. I am incredibly lucky to be surrounded by a team of enthusiastic, energetic, good humoured and passionate committee members who always go the extra mile - thank you. Every year I feel utterly privileged to meet and share the Relay experience with those who can only be described as some of the most amazing people on the planet who, like me, believe that we can and we will live in a world without cancer. With the spirit, determination and love you’ve each shown over the 24 hours of Relay and over the last 12 months of fundraising, together we can achieve anything. This year, united youve achieved something astounding - £62,129 for Cancer Research UK to fund their lifesaving treatments into all types of cancer.
“Together you are making a difference. You are saving lives. You are creating a world with more birthdays. I hope you’ve all made new friends, strengthened existing bonds, celebrated and remembered loved ones touched by cancer and made memories to last a lifetime. I am stuck for words to express how completely amazing I think you all are and to thank you for all you’ve done - you are all superheroes in my eyes and your power knows no bounds.”
