Josh Flannighan, of 15 Forteviot Gardens. Garlieston, admitted biting James Sloss and leaving him requiring around seven stitches at Dashwood Square, Newton Stewart on 11 March last year.

In court on Tuesday, lawyer Ian Milligan said it all stemmed from an earlier confrontation in which Flanninghan had been assaulted by several people, including the complainer.

He added: “There was some underlying ill will which did ultimately lead to this confrontation.”

He said Flannighan is a hard-working man whose judgement was impaired by alcohol that night.

Sheriff Kenneth Robb told Flannighan: “You are on the cusp of a jail term and only your work record and commitment has saved you.”
