A group of locals recently challenged themselves to a sponsored walk from the Isle of Whithorn to Newton Stewart.
Marlene Hughan’s mother suffers from MS and Marlene wanted to feel like she was doing something to help battle the condition. And so the idea of the 25-mile walk was born. Soon, three of Marlene’s friends offered to walk alongside her and to also gather sponsors.
Marlene, Jodie, Vicky and Maxine raised £700 between them and some supporters joined the girls towards the end of the walk at various stages from Wigtown onwards to give them encouragement to keep going.
At the end of the walk, the group supporters met at The Star Inn, Newton Stewart where family and friends had put on some food, Eileen, the owner from the Star Inn donated raffle prizes and Susan McKie played her guitar and led a sing-a-long night.
Susan said: “A great night was had and a further £365 was raised that evening.
“All funds raised on the day were gifted to MS Society. A team page at JustGiving called Galloway Giving for MS has been set up in order for various activities to combine their efforts to raise funds over the next year towards research into a cure for MS.
“The team total so far has reached over £4000 and other events have been organised.
“This fundraising is not linked to the local MS Society branch and although the two streams of fundraising are supportive of one another, anyone who wants their donations to support people locally should contact MS Society Stranraer.” The next event is bingo on 13 November in The Central Bar, Newton Stewart.
