The second round of the SFA Regional Challenge Cup (South) took place last weekend along with two South of Scotland League games although seven matches were lost to the weather with pitches being water-logged.
The cup matches started on Friday evening with others taking place on Saturday along with the league matches. The only South League team playing on Friday night was Edusport Academy who had Lowland League side Dalbeattie Star as their visitors to Galabank, Annan.
As expected this turned out to be a close contest with the south team coming out on top by the odd goal in five after extra time. Freddy Clemente opened the scoring for Edu after ten minutes play but an own goal sent the teams in at the break all square.
Second half play was very even until a deflected shot from Bandiougou Toure restored Edu’s lead with only three minutes left to play of regulation time. However Ritchie Maxwell scored in time added on to send the tie into extra time when Clemente found the net again to put Edu through to round three.
Heston Rovers and Crichton were locked in a local derby at Palmerston Park for a match that could have went either way but as present form suggested the visitors recorded a two goal to one victory to progress.
Newton Stewart were expected to progress at the expense of visitors Dumfries YMCA but the visitors had other ideas and took the lead after thirteen minutes when Ryan Coates opened the scoring following some good outfield play.
With the home side dominating play Robert Middleton eventually found the net to level the match. However Newton were reduced to nine men in the second half and YMCA took advantage to take a two goal lead through Ryan Service and another from Coates.
The Creesiders fought back though and Ryan McKie and Johnny Fisher squared the match before the visitors broke away near the end of the match to seal victory with Service supplying the goal.
Creetown travelled to play East Kilbride for a match the home side were strong favourites to progress from and that’s how it turned out to be in a thirteen goals to nil rout. However although the South team were outclassed by their more Senior opponents the result can be put down as a learning curve and one which will in the end benefit the team in the long run.
St Cuthbert Wanderers were looking to pull off a victory over neighbours Threave Rovers who are struggling in the Lowland League but it was not to be with the Castle Douglas side holding the upper hand. Greg Goodwin gave the home side the lead in the thirty seventh minute after Saints had dominated play with Ben Irving adding a second before the interval.
Saints striker Roman Soltys was sent off with twenty minutes left to play and Alistair Barnes added another two goals for Threave near the end of the match to give them a convincing victory.
There were two South of Scotland League matches played on Saturday with Wigtown and Bladnoch taking the three points in a four goals to two victory over Fleet Star at Trammondford Park.
Two early goals from Robert Jamieson set the home side on their way although Kieran Kenny drew one back for Star with John Lowe restoring Wigtowns lead ten minutes before the break. John Kiltie scored a fourth for the home side seven minutes after the re-start and three minutes later Ross Hunter completed the scoring when he scored Stars second.
At Lockerbie Mid-Annandale recorded a three goals to one victory over Abbey Vale with Denver Milligan giving them the lead in the first half only to be pegged back by Jack Donnelly from the penalty spot. In the second half Andy White and Sam Copeland scored for Mids to secure the three points.
