Police Scotland has named the woman who died at the scene of a fire in St Johns Close in Sorbie, Newton Stewart on the evening of Monday as 89 year old Mona Stephenson.
The fire was discovered at aroun 7.30pm and emergency services were alerted by neighbours. The woman was removed from the house by neighbours however was later pronounced dead at the scene.
In support of local policing resources, officers from the Major Investigation Team are currently carrying out enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the fire and the death of Mona Stephenson. A joint investigation into the cause of the fire has been carried out by Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. The Procurator Fiscal has been informed of the death and a post mortem examination is being arranged.
Detective Chief Inspector Allan Burton of the Major Investigation Team said: “We are currently carrying our enquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding this tragic event. We are keen to hear from anyone who may have had recent contact with the victim Mona Stephenson in the past few days, or indeed were in the area of St Johns Place in the early evening of Monday 26 January 2015, to get in touch with us through 101 if they can help.”
