Roads department exceeds its budget

The local authority department that deals with the regions roads has exceeded its budget for 2012-13 by £162,000 because of the severe winter weather.

At a meeting of the DGFirst Management Committee yesterday at the Council Offices in Dumfries council it was recommended that these costs be met from corporate resources and that the severe weather emergency fund of £500,000 be reinstated.

Statistics showed that gritting treatments were double that of the previous year as was the tonnage of salt applied to the roads. As a result the winter operations costs were £958,000 above budgeted levels, including £555,000 which related specifically to the emergency response to the severe condition in the last week of March.
